Over the past 7 years, I’ve seen two types of people land promotions.

Luckily for you, I’ve been both, and I can tell you which one actually gets you ahead (without burning out).

You see, there’s a common misconception that volume is the key to getting promoted. So what do people do?

  • “They work more hours”

  • “They take on more responsibilities”

  • “And they hope for the best”

But the outcome is usually one of two things:

  1. Your boss sees this as an opportunity to overwork you for the same pay.

  2. You do get promoted… but you’re still overworked.

I hope you can recognize a trap when you see one.

It’s a cliché to say “work smarter, not harder”—but clichés are clichés for a reason.

Today, I want to show you 3 strategies to actually land a promotion, without getting stuck in that vicious cycle.

The same strategies I’ve used over the years to land several title promotions and salary raises (plus I will include a 🎁 free template to help you make your work impossible to ignore).

Strategy #1: Bring Receipts

Your manager won’t remember all of your hard work and effort.

So it is your job to make sure, none of it goes unnoticed or forgotten. Without this, none of the other strategies below matter.

I recommend you keep a work journal to track every project, big or small, along with:

  • What you did

  • Who you worked with

  • What tools or techniques you used

  • And most importantly: what impact you had

This isn’t just for show. It’ll save you during mid-year reviews, full-year reviews, and when it’s time to update your resume.

This is what my personal work journal looks like:
